Travel guide to Riga

Art Nouveau facades, Baltic calm

Mornings start with a pour-over on Miera iela, where the roasters and record shops set the pace. Afternoons run from a desk in a high-ceilinged pre-war flat or a coworking floor near the Central Market. Evenings are cheap dinners in Vecrīga, a sauna, or a concert at the National Opera. In summer the light holds past ten and the whole city decamps to the beach at weekends.

Remote-ready snapshot

  • 91% fibre coverage, among the best in the EU
  • UNESCO Old Town and Europe's densest Art Nouveau
  • Jūrmala's Baltic beaches 25 minutes by train
  • €50 a month covers every tram, bus and trolleybus
  • Digital nomad visa: 12 months, renewable once

Best Time

May to September is the sweet spot: daylight past 10pm, warm Baltic evenings and the Jūrmala beach season. Winters are dark and genuinely cold, so between October and March book a place with heating included rather than metered.

Internet & Cowork

Latvia runs around 91% fibre-to-the-premises coverage against an EU average near 56%. Gigabit from Tet, Balticom or Baltcom is standard in renovated buildings. TechHub Riga, Startup House and Teikums cover coworking at a fraction of Berlin rates.

Getting Around

One €50 monthly pass covers every tram, trolleybus and bus on Rīgas Satiksme. The centre is flat and walkable end to end, RIX airport is 30 minutes away on bus 22 for €1.50, and trains reach Jūrmala in under half an hour.

Remote Work Culture

A small, easygoing scene rather than a nomad crowd: laptop-friendly cafés along Miera iela and Centrs, a startup community around TechHub, and a digital nomad visa valid 12 months and renewable once for non-EU remote workers.
